Claude Usage Limit Reached? What to Do Next

Hit "5-hour limit reached" or "You've reached your weekly limit" in Claude? How to tell which limit stopped you, your options, and how to avoid a repeat.

When Claude says you've reached a usage limit, first read the message: it tells you which limit stopped you and when it resets. "5-hour limit reached" means a wait of five hours at most. "You've reached your weekly limit" can mean days. Then you have four options: wait for the reset, keep going on usage credits, use a free limit reset if Anthropic has given you one, or upgrade your plan. Before you pick, save what you were working on and check that the message is really a usage limit and not one of the errors that look like it.

This covers Claude's Pro, Max and Ultra plans as of November 2026, in claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code. All three draw from the same limits, so switching apps doesn't help.

Step 1: read which limit you hit#

Anthropic's error messages article lists the wording. Without usage credits, you'll see one of these:

  • "5-hour limit reached - resets [time]": the session limit. It started with your first message of the session and resets in full five hours after that, so the wait is often shorter than five hours.
  • "You've reached your weekly limit. It resets [day] at [time].": the weekly limit. Its reset day and time are fixed for your account and don't move.

Before either one, you usually get a warning: "Approaching session limit", "Approaching weekly limit" or "You've used X% of your weekly limit." If you see one, it's a good time to finish up and save your work.

Settings → Usage shows both bars: Current session with the time left, and the weekly limit with its next reset. (Verified Ultra accounts have no session bar, because they have no 5-hour limit.) In Claude Code, type /status.

If you're on Max or Ultra and only Fable stopped answering, you've likely used the Fable share of your week. Anthropic's Fable models article says those plans can spend "up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable models". Past that, you can keep using Fable on usage credits, or pick another model in the model menu and keep working; the rest of your weekly limit is still there. On Pro, Fable runs on usage credits from the start.

Step 2: make sure it's a usage limit#

Three other messages get mistaken for usage limits. None of them is fixed by waiting for a reset or by paying for more usage.

  • "Your message will exceed the length limit for this chat." That's the length of this one conversation, not your plan's usage. Start a new chat, attach fewer or smaller files, or split the message.
  • "Due to unexpected capacity constraints, Claude is unable to respond to your message. Please try again soon." The problem is high demand on Anthropic's side, and your account is fine. Try again in a few minutes. Anthropic notes it won't show on the status page.
  • Claude Code asking about API credits or a low credit balance. Check whether ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set in your shell. If it is, Claude Code "will use this API key for authentication instead of your Claude subscription", per Anthropic's Claude Code plan article, so you're paying API rates and the plan's limits aren't the problem. Unset it, or run /login to sign in with your plan.

Step 3: save your place before you choose#

A limit stops new answers; it doesn't delete anything. Your chats stay where they were.

  • In a chat, note where you stopped and what's left to do. When you come back, a fresh chat with that short summary costs less than continuing a very long one.
  • In Claude Code, a response that was already running may finish its current step. You'll see "Usage limit reached · wrapping up." Anthropic says this small, capped allowance only covers a response in progress, counts toward your weekly limit, and is still rolling out. Pro gets it once per weekly period; Max each time it reaches a 5-hour limit. Let it finish, then commit or note what changed before you walk away.

Step 4: pick one of four options#

Wait for the reset#

It's free and usually the right answer for the 5-hour limit, since the reset time is in the message. For the weekly limit, waiting can mean days, which is when the other options matter.

Keep going on usage credits#

Pro, Max and Ultra can turn on usage credits in Settings → Usage → Usage credits → Enable, add a payment method, set a monthly spend limit, and add funds. Past a limit, your requests keep working and are billed at standard API rates on top of your plan. The message changes to "5-hour limit resets [time] - continuing with usage credits" or "Now using credits. Your plan limit resets [day] at [time]." Work continues until you reach your monthly spend limit or run out of funds with auto-reload off. Details are in Manage usage credits.

Set the spend limit low at first. Long chats, big files and the larger models cost more per message, so a heavy afternoon can add up.

On a Team or seat-based Enterprise plan, ask your admin: those plans buy usage credits for the organization.

Use a free limit reset, if you have one#

Anthropic sometimes gives eligible accounts a one-time limit reset. If you have one, you'll see Reset for free on the limit message and in Settings → Usage, on the web and in Claude Desktop (not in Claude Code or on mobile). It sets your five-hour or your weekly limit back to full. Your regular weekly reset still comes on its usual day.

Upgrade the plan#

Pro to Max raises both limits; Max to Ultra removes the 5-hour limit once Anthropic has verified the account (a temporary limit applies until then). Anthropic's usage and length limits article says an upgrade applies the new plan's limits right away. Do this if you hit the weekly limit most weeks. If it happens once, credits or waiting cost less. Check Claude's pricing page for current plans and prices.

How to hit it less often#

Both limits measure how much work Claude does, not how many messages you send. Based on Anthropic's usage limit best practices and its limits article:

  • Start a new chat when the topic changes. Each new message in a long chat costs more than one in a short chat.
  • Batch related questions into one message, and give the full context up front so Claude doesn't need to ask.
  • Put files you reuse in a project. Project content is cached and counts less when reused, until the cache expires after a break.
  • Pick the model and effort level for the task. Save the largest model and high effort for the work that needs them.
  • Watch the warnings. "Approaching weekly limit" on a Tuesday is your cue to slow down before Thursday's big task.

For how the two limits work and reset, see Claude's 5-hour and weekly limits, explained.

If you have more than one Claude account#

Each account has its own limits and its own reset times. If you have a work seat and a personal Pro, hitting the limit on your personal account doesn't touch your work seat. Keep work on the work account; before moving personal work to an employer's seat because your own ran out, ask your employer.

Where several accounts help is seeing the limits coming. Settings → Usage only shows the account you're signed in to, so checking three accounts means three sign-ins or three browser profiles.

On a Mac, Clawdrobe gives each of your accounts its own copy of Claude Desktop and shows every account's 5-hour and weekly meters in one window. It can alert you at 70, 80 or 90% of a limit, so you see a limit coming in time to save your work. It reads the meters from files Claude Desktop writes on your Mac; it never calls Claude's servers or touches the limits. Each account can also open Claude Code as that account, which counts against that account's limits like any other Claude Code session.

Clawdrobe is free with every feature for two accounts; Clawdrobe Pro is a one-time $10 for unlimited accounts on up to 3 Macs. It needs macOS 26 or later, runs on Apple silicon and Intel, and isn't affiliated with Anthropic. If you only need Claude Code on two accounts, one CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR per account works without any app; see how to use multiple accounts in Claude Code.

Quick answers#

  • How long do I have to wait? The message gives the exact time. For the 5-hour limit it's at most five hours; for the weekly limit, until your account's fixed weekly reset.
  • Will switching to Claude Desktop or Claude Code help? No. claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code share the same limits.
  • Does starting a new chat reset the limit? No, but it makes each message cheaper afterwards.
  • Can I pay to keep going right now? Yes, with usage credits on Pro, Max and Ultra, at standard API rates up to the spend limit you set.
