How to Switch Accounts in Claude Desktop
Claude Desktop can switch between a personal and an organization account on the same email. For two different emails, here are your options.

If both accounts use the same email (a personal plan and your company's Team or Enterprise organization), Claude Desktop switches between them for you: click your initials or name in the lower left corner and pick the other account. If they use different emails, there's no switcher: you sign out of one and sign in to the other, or you set up a separate Claude app for each account.
Case 1: personal and organization account on the same email#
Anthropic's help article Move your personal Claude account to a Team or Enterprise organization describes this setup. As of November 2026:
- Click your initials or name in the lower left corner of the Claude window.
- A blue checkmark marks the account you're using now.
- Click the other account to use it, with its own separate conversations and projects.
This only covers one personal account and the organizations on the same email address; it's the only switcher Anthropic documents.
If your company invites you to a Team or Enterprise plan and you already pay for a personal plan on that email, you'll be asked what to do with it. Choosing Keep both accounts leaves your personal account active and gives you this switcher. The other choice closes your personal account and either moves its chats into the organization or deletes them, so read the help article before you click.
Case 2: two accounts with different emails#
A typical setup: a work account on [email protected], a personal one on Gmail, maybe a client's seat on a third address. Claude Desktop holds one sign-in at a time, so it has nothing to switch between. You have four options.
Sign out and sign back in#
- Sign out from the account menu (your name in the lower left corner).
- Sign in with the other email and get through the sign-in check.
- Find the chat you were in, if you remember which one it was.
It costs nothing and needs no setup. It's fine if you switch once a week. If you switch several times a day, every switch costs a sign-in and the thread you were in, and it's easy to start a work chat in the personal account without noticing.
Keep the second account in a browser profile#
Leave your main account in Claude Desktop and keep the other at claude.ai in a separate browser profile (in Safari, File → New Profile; Chrome and Firefox have profiles too). Both accounts stay signed in and open at the same time.
The catch: the browser account has none of the desktop app's features, such as MCP servers and desktop extensions, and it lives in a browser window rather than its own app in the Dock. For an account you only chat with, that's often enough.
Use a second macOS user#
A second user on your Mac has its own copy of Claude Desktop with its own sign-in. With Fast User Switching you can flip between users from the menu bar. You get full separation, at the price of a whole second desktop with its own Dock and its own files.
Give each account its own Claude app#
This is what Clawdrobe does. It builds a separate copy of Claude Desktop for each account, with its own name, Dock icon, sign-in and chat history, so you switch by moving to another app and nothing ever signs out.
- Download Clawdrobe and drag it to Applications.
- Click Import Current Claude as New Account to bring in the account Claude Desktop is signed in to now.
- Click Add Account, name it (say, "Personal") and sign in to the second account in its own window.
From then on you switch like this:
- Dock or ⌘-Tab: each account is its own app with its own icon.
- Keyboard: ⌃ ⌥ Space from any app opens a quick switcher. In Clawdrobe, ⌘ 1 to ⌘ 9 open your accounts, and ⌘ 0 opens whichever account has the most room left in its limits.
- Menu bar: open any account from Clawdrobe's menu bar icon.
Each account has its own 5-hour and weekly usage limits. Clawdrobe shows both for every account and can alert you at 70, 80 or 90%. It can also close accounts you haven't used for a while to free memory.
Clawdrobe doesn't change Claude. Each account app runs Claude's own unchanged code with its own data folder, so it signs in and talks to Anthropic exactly like Claude Desktop does. Clawdrobe never reads your passwords, tokens or chats.
It's free with every feature for two accounts. Clawdrobe Pro is a one-time $10 for unlimited accounts on up to 3 Macs. It needs macOS 26 or later and runs on Apple silicon and Intel. Clawdrobe is not affiliated with Anthropic.
Switching accounts in Claude Code#
Claude Code in Terminal has the same one-sign-in-at-a-time limit, and the fix is similar: give each account its own config folder with CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, or let Clawdrobe add a command per account (open the account, then Tools → Terminal Command):
claude-work # Claude Code signed in as your work account
claude-personal # …and as your personal one
How to use multiple accounts in Claude Code walks through both ways step by step.
Common problems#
- The switcher shows only one account. The built-in switcher needs a personal account and an organization account on the same email. Two personal accounts on different emails never show up there.
- Your chats seem to be gone after you switch. Each account has its own conversations and projects. They're still there; you're just in the other account.
- You're not sure which account you're in. Check the name in the lower left corner before you start a chat with client or company material.
- A Team invite asks what to do with your personal account. If you want to keep paying for and using your personal plan separately, choose Keep both accounts. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store, that's the only option you'll get, and you cancel the Apple subscription in your Apple ID settings if you no longer want it.
Which one should you pick?#
- Personal and work on the same email: use the built-in switcher in the lower left corner.
- Different emails, switching rarely: sign out and in.
- Second account is only for chat: a browser profile.
- Two or more accounts in Claude Desktop every day: one app per account. Using multiple Claude accounts on one Mac compares all the options in more detail.
